HAUS | Surf, sauna & plunge

Tucked away at the end of a quiet street in Diamond Beach, HAUS is a mid-century inspired beach retreat just 100 metres from the sand. Surrounded by coastal reserve, it’s a place to slow down, sleep deeply and wake to the sound of the ocean. Inspired by the relaxed Australian beach houses of the 1960s, warm timber, glass and effortless indoor–outdoor living set the tone. A custom-built Finnish sauna overlooking the littoral rainforest, mineral plunge pool, and outdoor hot-and-cold shower create a simple ritual of heat, cold and restoration. Diamond Beach stretches for six kilometres, offering swimming, surfing, long walks and rockpools to explore — with dogs welcome off leash 24/7. Intimate, peaceful and immersed in nature, HAUS is designed for days spent between the beach, the sauna and nowhere else you need to be.

Designed around passive solar principles, the house makes the most of winter sun, summer shade and natural ventilation to stay comfortable year-round. Polished concrete floors, soaring ceilings, warm timber and expansive glazing give the interiors their distinctive character, while connecting the house to the gardens and reserve beyond.

At the heart of HAUS is an open kitchen and dining space with a generous timber island, dual-boiler coffee machine, dishwasher, chilled filtered water and six-seat dining table. A bay-window reading nook sits alongside the living room, with a deep lounge, Sony Smart TV, BOSE portable speaker and cosy log fireplace.

The king master suite overlooks the pool and reserve and includes an ensuite with bath and separate shower. All three bedrooms are dressed in natural linen bedding, with two queen bedrooms each offering a dedicated workspace, and a central bathroom and separate toilet completing the space.

Outside, native gardens, littoral rainforest, a productive vegetable garden and fruit trees create a lush, natural setting. The wellness space brings together the Finnish sauna, mineral plunge pool and outdoor hot-and-cold shower, with linen robes provided. An outdoor lounge, Weber BBQ and alfresco dining area are set up for long lunches and relaxed evenings outdoors, all while listening to the ocean.

HAUS is a contemporary take on the Australian beach house — considered design, nature and simple coastal living.

Location:
Diamond Beach is a peaceful stretch of coastline, located just north of Forster and Tuncurry. It offers a quieter alternative to busier coastal destinations while still being close to town conveniences. The small village provides cafes, takeaway options, and holiday accommodation, adding ease and comfort to a relaxed beach escape.

The beach runs for around six kilometres in a wide arc of golden sand, framed by dunes, native vegetation, and the Pacific Ocean. Even during peak holiday periods, it rarely feels crowded, with plenty of space to walk, relax, and enjoy the natural surroundings. Surf conditions vary from calm swimming days to more consistent surf breaks when swell increases, and lifeguard patrols operate seasonally, mainly during peak holiday periods.

One of the standout features of Diamond Beach is its sense of openness and connection to nature. Accessible viewing platforms offer elevated ocean views, where dolphins are frequently seen offshore and migrating humpback whales can often be spotted seasonally. Wildlife is abundant throughout the area, with dolphins, seabirds, and native animals regularly encountered along the coastline.

It is also one of the region’s few year-round off-leash dog-friendly beaches, making it especially popular with pet owners. At the northern end, the beach connects with Saltwater National Park, offering bushland walks and coastal lookouts, and linking the area to the cultural heritage of the Biripi people.

Getting here:
This property is located approximately 141 kilometres from Newcastle Airport and around a 3.5-hour drive (317 kilometres) from Sydney Airport.

Due to its secluded and peaceful coastal setting, it is recommended that guests have their own vehicle or hire a car for their stay. Public transport, taxi, and rideshare services are limited in the area, so having your own transport will make it easier to explore and get around comfortably.
